Grandmother and widow Irene (Virna Lisi) lives by herself in an old villa, which slowly goes to ruins. Surrounded by memories of days gone by, she tries to impart to her three children the desire for close family ties. After the death of her husband, daughter Sara (Margherita Buy) spends her life in loneliness and seems to have lost all contact with her son Marco (Francesco Scianna), whom, she fears, is homosexual.
Irene’s other daughter Rita (Sandra Ceccarelli) struggles with the humdrum way of her marriage. She and her husband (Marco Baliani) stopped having sex, and she pines for another lover. And there’s Irene’s son Claudio (Luigi Lo Cascio), afraid to come out and only capable of sex with his boyfriend (Marco Quaglia) without any emotional ties.
Claudio has troubles coming out to his not understanding mother. This makes him emotionally detached from his boyfriend. |
