Megan (played by Natasha Lyonne) has got it all. She's popular, pretty, a model student, dates the captain of the football team, and she's a cheerleader. One day Megan comes home to fine her family and friends gathered in her honor. They begin an 'intervention' in which they confront her with knowledge of her homosexuality. Megan is horrified that they would think of her this way, but based on their overwhelming evidence (she's a vegetarian, likes Georgia O'Keefe, hates kissing her boyfriend) she is forced to attend True Directions, a local homosexual rehabilitation camp. Megan becomes the perfect resident at True Directions. She can't wait to be straight. The treatment directors, Mary and Mike (played by Cathy Moriarty and RuPaul), begin to teach Megan how to be a heterosexual. At rehab, Megan meets Graham (played by Clea DuVall), a rebellious rich girl, who ridicules Megan until they are forcibly paired up as 'friends' designed to mentor each other to heterosexuality. Graham confides to Megan that she has no real desire to be heterosexual, unlike Megan who is still excelling at her treatment.

Mary tells Megan in family therapy that the 'root' of her homosexuality is her dad's (played by Bud Cort) unemployment. Although she is relieved to have found the 'cause' of her perversion, she wonders if it's contrived. Megan is also developing a huge crush on Graham, and she begins to crumble. She sneaks out of True Directions one night and goes to a gay bar where she kisses Graham for the first time. A few weeks later, Megan gets caught having sex with Graham and opts to leave True Directions, trying to convince Graham to leave with her. Graham refuses, still wanting her parent's approval. While living at a gay Safe House, Megan hatches a plan to storm the True Directions graduation. She confesses her love to Graham and finally convinces her to leave 'conversion' therapy. |
The film is mostly set around a homosexual rehab camp. This camp is intented for 'treatment' of gays to become straight. |
The premise for 'But I'm A Cheerleader' is not fictional. There are over 200 camps for homosexual conversion therapy across the United States. |
Personally its one of my favorite movies, its got that very bubble gum, uppidy vibe throughout the movie and all very funny. |
The movie in my opinion in some ways even makes fun of the way that straight people think. For the person like me who loves gay interest films, this is a must see. |

Megan [to Graham]: One, two, three, four, I won't take no anymore. |
