Rachel Rosen (Helen Lesnick) flees New York City after another traumatic breakup with her capricious girlfriend Reggie Abravanel (Michele Greene) and arrives at her parents' home in San Diego. Upon arrival, she is greeted by her PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) parents, Leah and Sam Rosen (Arlene Golonka and Michael Moerman), who are adamant to see their wayward daughter settle down with a nice girl. Rachel refutes her mother's offers to set her up and decides to reenter the dating scene, determined to find "Ms. Rightowitz", on her own. Rachel sets out on a cavalcade of blind dates courtesy of her mostly male friends and, ala Goldilocks, deems each one: too California, too goth, too flannel or too in need of psychiatric evaluation. Out of desperation, she finally lets her mother set her up with Christine Peterson (Erica Shaffer), by all appearances a typically WASP California girl. Much to Rachel's chagrin, mom is right and soon Rachel and Christine are loading up the proverbial U-Haul.

After a few visits with the in-laws on the high holy days, Christine becomes intrigued with Judaism and decides that she wants to convert. Meanwhile, Rachel's friends and family, including her sister-in-law (Suzanne Westenhoefer) wait for her to screw up the relationship. They know, even if she won't admit it, that she still carries a torch for her ex-girlfriend and they're not sure what would happen if Reggie appeared to reclaim her, not that that could happen, because as we all know, once it's over, it's over, right? Well, Reggie does come to reclaim Rachel, coincidently, the week of Christine and Rachel's wedding. Rachel is overwhelmed with wedding jitters, fears of commitment and what to make of Reggie traveling cross-country in order to see her. Will Rachel run from commitment, yetnagain? |
My Big Fat Greek Wedding meets Kissing Jessica Stein … this is My Big Fat Jewish Lesbian Wedding. Welcomed by sold-out audiences and rave reviews at over 50 film festivals worldwide, "A Family Affair" is the most popular lesbian romantic comedy in years. Director/star Helen Lesnick was hailed by Variety as "a budding talent," and described the film as a "Woody Allen trifecta reconfigured with sharp wit... Lesnick, like [Woody Allen], defends herself with caustically dry humor." |
The film won top honors at four film festivals, including the gay and lesbian film festivals in Philadelphia, Phoenix, Barcelona and Madrid. When "A Family Affair" was released in major metropolitan regions this spring, more acclaim was heaped on the film. The Los Angeles Times called the film, "a serious romantic comedy of such strength and substance and so entertaining." And the San Francisco Chronicle called the film "A good old-fashioned love story that never loses its sense of humor." |
