In Los Angeles, patriarch Nathaniel Fisher (played by Richard Jenkins) dies in a car wreck on Christmas Eve, casting a pall over the holiday homecoming of son Nate (played by Peter Krause). In addition to dealing with his dad's death, Nate must cope with his controlling mother, Ruth (played by Frances Conroy), who has been having a secret affair. Brother David (played by Michael Hall), a closeted gay man who manages the business. |
Sister Claire (played by Lauren Ambrose), a rebellious teen who receives the bad news after taking drugs with her new boyfriend, Gabe (played by Eric Balfour). The only seemingly positive aspect of Nate's life is Brenda (played by Rachel Griffiths), a passionate woman he meets on the plane. But Brenda's crazy family proves more dysfunctional that Nate's. |
David Fisher is a closeted gay man who's lover Keith is an open and proud LAPD officer. The fact that David has troubles coming out is the reason why Keith ends the relationship. |
A great drama about a family who has to deal with a lot of issues. The oneliners are great, the casting is very believable and the background of an undertakers business is bizar but gives just that extra edge. |
Nate: My God, I think David is gay. Nate: Look, I have to go identify our dead father's body. I'm sorry you're having a bad drug experience, but deal with it. Claire: Apparently you want a child with an eating disorder. Ruth: I've had the most wonderful time tonight coming to this funny little restaurant and having you yell at me in the bathroom! Thank you. Brenda: The future is just a fucking concept that we use to avoid living today. |
Nate: This is my... uh, my girlfriend, Brenda. Nate: Uh, Brenda, why do you have my name tattooed on your ass?
Ruth: I would like to go on record as saying I am in full support of you going to art school.
Ruth: So what's new? |
