Paul (Ron Petronicolos), a lanky, long-haired student returns to Eastmont College for his senior year and has to decide about going to seminary. He is conflicted because of his same-sex desires (acted upon over the summer) and now faces pressure from his father to "straighten out". Returning to school, Paul hopes to renew his friendship with Hector (Merrick McMahon). However, a hunky new student named Alex (Mike Dolan) arrives and captures the eye, the mind, and the heart of Paul, especially when he openly discusses homosexuality in Bible Study.
|
As the couple share zealous kisses and a forbidden love, Hector is physically abused by a trio of jocks, some of whom might be gay themselves! When their affair becomes the talk of the school, Paul is threatened with expulsion from Dean Saunders (Rand Smith), a major closet case in his own right (there’s a whole lot of homosexuality in this school). At least the cute queer boys have help from Robbie (Patrick Orion Hoesterey), Paul’s straight but understanding roommate. |
An engrossing tale of gay students at Bible college, battling with their own sexuality and a bigoted system. |

I watched "The Last Year" with great interest because "been there, done that". I was even in a seminary, going through the same motions. I thought the film was definitely good, though there are inconsistencies. I thought the acting & script were weakest in the beginning, but by the middle of the film, they had me. |
There are moments when you want to say,.."Yeah, yeah,..I GET IT already!" Especially in the gay harrassment scenes, but theres food for thought in most areas. I recommend it and would give it 3 stars on a five star grid. |
