Back to top Synopsis

It's Sex and the City meets The Wedding Banquet for young San Franciscan Daniel Chang (Jay Wong), a young Chines yuppie living at home with his clueless, traditional mother and grandmother.

Desperate for a grandchild, his mother is eager to see him married and spends much of her time planning introductions to suitable Chinese girls for Daniel.

Of course, the fact that Daniel is gay is something that he has never discussed with his traditional Chinese mother, since he knows it is something that she (and his deceased father, whom the mother refers to constantly) could never approve.

But when she recruits a new lodger for the downstairs flat, Daniel finds himself falling for Robert (James Marks), the hot Southern boy who's moved to the big city.

Well, Robert's not a suitable Chinese girl - but is he gay? And does he feel the same way about Daniel? A flood in the first floor apartment forces Robert to live with Daniel upstairs in his bedroom while the plumbers fix the mess downstairs.

Love develops, while Daniel tries to maintain the facade of heterosexuality for his family. Of course mom catches Daniel and Robert together, and all hell breaks loose.

Back to top Gay Interest

A clever, romantic and sexy comedy about finding love right at home. Daniel, a closeted gay Chines-American who lives with his old-fashioned mother and grandmother.

When Robert, an adorable gay guy, rents a room in the house, things heat up rather quickly.

Back to top Personal review

The plot is definitely predictable, but the handling of the story is still light and enjoyable. The technical quality is good for a low budget work, and the acting is above average. Some nudity and simulated sex, nothing more than an "R" rating.

The DVD includes commentary tracks and outtakes, the latter providing some insight that the actors did indeed put in considerable effort. It's a renter, not a keeper, and I'd give it 3½ stars out of 5.
