Charlie (played by Dan Futterman) is a man deeply wounded by a traumatic event. Long suppressed, his memories fester to the surface one day, sending him to the brink of his own destruction. He wanders the nighttime streets of the city, a mournful lost soul determinedly pursuing a mysterious stranger whom he is convinced holds the key to his redemption. His encounters are planned and chance: with a homeless man who sleeps by his building, with a friend who's dying, with the couple who lives (and noisily loves) in the flat above him, with a bartender and a one-night-stand he follows home, and with a tattooed stranger whom he seeks out and befriends. |
Along the way, Charlie inhabits a city full of moments of violence and of stories and legends: a kidney thief, a microwaved poodle, a rat in a hot dog bun, a baby left on a car top, a tourist's toothbrush, needles in public-phone change slots. Charlie lives and tells his own stories. What caused his melancholy? |
Charlie, it appears, has lost his lover Chris (played by Matt Keeslar). How they separated is one of the film's big secrets. Seemingly, to fill the emotional and physical loss that plagues him, he spends one night in search of this beautiful, tattooed, macho-type who has wandered in and out of his life. |
Along the way he visits an old friend Brett (played by Alan Cumming) who's in love with him, is picked up by a neurotic day time soap opera star, has drinks with a cute straight neighbor and his date, and cruises Riverside Park. |
