The early years in a nutshell...
Keanu is a real melting pot of nationalities. Born (September 2, 1964) in Beirut to an English-born mother and half-Hawaiian, half-Chinese father. Keanu's mother Patricia met father Samuel Nowlin Reeves (Geologist) while she was working as a showgirl at a local club.
Australia
For one year they stayed in Australia where Keanu's younger sister, Kim, was born in 1966. The marriage didn't last long. Patricia and Samuel got divorced. Samuel went to Hawaii.
New York, New York
Patricia moved with Keanu and Kim to New York City, where she married Paul Aaron, a Broadway and Hollywood director.
Toronto, Canada
The 'Aarons family' then moved to the more family-friendly Toronto (hippie section), and took up Canadian citizenship (which Keanu still retains), but Patricia and Paul Aaron split up a year later.
There would be two more husbands. First the rock-and-roll promoter Robert Miller. With whom Patricia had Keanu's second (half) sister Karina in 1976. Her fourth husband would be Jack Bond, a hair salon owner, whom she divorced in 1994. Nowadays Patricia works as a costume designer. She did work for people like David Bowie and Dolly Parton.
Through all his dads Keanu had a wide variety of experiences like wrestling with rocker Alice Cooper or spending time in Jewish summer camp.
Keanu's last visit to his true father Samuel was at the age of thirteen on Hawaii. In 1994 Samuel had to face a ten-year prison sentence for cocaine possession. He was paroled in mid-1996. Keanu described himself as "a bourgeois, middle-class white boy with an absent father, a strong-willed mother, and two beautiful younger sisters."
At a young age, Keanu had his mind set on hockey and theater. He would mix the two by reciting Shakespeare while tending goal during a hockey game. He started acting in Toronto during High School, and began landing roles in plays and commercials.
Keanu was a high school dropout: "He wasn't quite, well... with it", a former teacher of Keanu has said. "He always left his books at home or forgot his homework. But he'd just smile and go back home to get them." After bouncing around to several different high schools, Keanu dropped out to pursue acting full-time at the age of seventeen.
Keanu made with one of his first acting jobs a sensation in Toronto with his role in the homoerotic play "Wolfboy" (1984); he also acted in several Canadian teleplays. When Rob Lowe came to town to film "Youngblood" (1986), Keanu could combine his first loves: hockey and drama.
Los Angeles, California
Keanu took the big step to leave Canada behind and meet up with his stepfather Paul Aaron, the producer, in 1986. A few name changes followed as "Keanu" was considered too exotic by his new manager. They settled on K.C. Reeves, but it was short-lived. Just Keanu Reeves it was, and it was gonna be.
Keanu caught the attention of directors and critics for his performance as a misunderstood teenager in "River's Edge" (1987). Many more feature films and television appearances would follow. Keanu's acting would become big business in the USA.
Keanu's love for music also started at an early age, however, he didn't begin playing the bass until he was twenty-three. Self taught, except for one lesson, he would spend hours a day picking away at the four-stringed bass. Meeting Robert Mailhouse in 1991 lead to his first band experience jamming in his garage, and eventually playing some live shows, then on to what we all know today. (Dogstar!)
